Mobile Mammography Saves Time and Lives

It is important to be proactive about your health. Getting preventive screenings and scheduling annual wellness exams are two of the most important steps you can take to manage your health. But in today’s busy, hectic world, it often seems like we do not have enough time to fit in all the various to do items. Even then, when you feel well, scheduling an annual exam or a timely screening is easily overlooked. The truth is we all need to make the time. Screenings are the best way to identify and treat potential health problems before they develop or worsen. Take breast cancer as an example, statistically 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Early diagnosis can vastly increase survival rates. Screening with mammography is associated with a 15 – 20 percent reduction in deaths from breasts cancer. The primary reason for the reduction in death rates is that routine mammograms help find breast cancers when they are small, thereby helping to reduce the number of women who are diagnosed with more advanced stages of breast cancer. We know the importance of finding and treating cancers in the early stages. This is why Portneuf Medical Center offers Mobile Mammography. It is fast, easy, convenient, and comes complete with state of the art technology, expert staff and superior service. mammo_coach_-_side_view All mammograms are carefully evaluated by a board certified radiologist who specializes in breast imaging and findings are reported to you and your physician. Our mobile unit travels to various locations throughout the region providing high quality screening services. The Mobile Unit provided over 3,000 women with mammograms this last year. However, even with the mobile unit and the October awareness campaign, Idaho continues to rank near the bottom in the US for breast cancer screenings; only 25 to 35 percent of Idaho women who need mammograms are getting this life-saving medical screening. Our goal is to increase your odds of early detection by making it more convenient to get necessary and important breast care screening. We strive to be there when and where you need us. If you have financial burdens lack of insurance or other related factors that may be preventing you from getting necessary screenings, call us. Under the Affordable Care Act, women’s preventative services such as mammograms are now covered by most health plans. If you are still in need, we have options available and funds, based on need, to help with this expense. The American Cancer Society recommends that a woman obtain her first baseline mammogram at the age of 40. After that, she should receive a yearly mammogram. Women who are at high risk for developing breast cancer may need to obtain mammograms earlier than these recommendations and at more frequent intervals. It is important to work with your primary care physician to determine when you should be screened for certain health issues. Moms, aunts, sisters, spouses and friends are encouraged to visit a health care professional to receive preventative services and screenings for early detection of breast cancer. It is quick and readily available throughout southeastern Idaho; there is no reason to put off this all-important and potentially life-saving screening exam. Appointments on the mobile mammography unit are typically scheduled by the facility where the unit will be located or by your primary care physician.
