What to pack in your hospital bag for labor and delivery

It can be easy to overpack or forget important items when it’s time to prepare your hospital bag. Labor can be unpredictable, so having your bag ready ahead of time helps you avoid last-minute stress.

To start, make sure you have the essentials when you come to the hospital:

  • Car seat (ideally already installed in car)
  • Phone charging cable
  • Comfortable underwear (high-waisted, soft)
  • Outfits for discharge day for baby and you
  • Clothes and sleeping items for partner/support persons
  • Non-slip socks or slippers
  • Specific toiletry items
  • Basic toiletries
    • Toothbrush, toothpaste
    • Face wash, moisturizer
    • Lip balm
    • Hairbrush, hair ties
    • Deodorant
  • Glasses or contact lens supplies (if needed)

Next, consider these optional items that may make your stay more comfortable:

  • Robe
  • Snacks
  • Preferred pillow
  • Long charging cable (6–10 ft)
  • Handheld/portable fan
  • Dry shampoo
  • Relaxation aids (eye mask/ear plugs)

Our facility will provide essentials for you and your new baby, which could include pads, wipes, diapers, nipple cream, basic blanket/swaddle, breastfeeding supplies and meals. Remember, pack what will make you most comfortable and don’t be afraid to ask your care team if you need something. We’re here to support you every step of the way!
