Our physical therapy services
Physical medicine and rehabilitation, also known as physiatry, is a specialty focused on the body’s musculoskeletal system (bones, joints, nerves, and muscles). Our physical therapists use non-surgical treatment options to improve the quality of life for patients of all ages suffering from a wide range of conditions, including stroke, traumatic brain injuries, hip fractures and more. At Portneuf, we are proud to provide rehabilitative care not just for adults, but for infants and children as well.

Occupational therapy
Work medicine, sometimes referred to as occupation medicine or environmental medicine, is devoted to the prevention and treatment of job-related illness and injury. Portneuf Medical Center’s WorkMed Occupational Health Center is a comprehensive occupational medicine clinic specializing in injury and illness care. Our occupational medicine physicians are knowledgeable regarding workplace laws and regulations, work fitness, return-to-work procedures and disability management.
Our occupational therapy services include:
- Beryllium exams
- Breath alcohol testing
- DOT physicals
- Department of Transportation (DOT) and non-DOT urine drug collection
- Hearing conservation programs and screenings
- Injury prevention and education
- Law enforcement and firefighter exams
- Medical surveillance
- OSHA mandated exams, including asbestos and hazardous materials
- Pre-placement physicals

Our occupational medicine team includes nurse case managers and a certified Medical Review Officer (MRO). We also offer employee health fairs, where we provide vaccinations, flu shots, and TB testing. In addition, our WorkMed staff provides medical imaging and X-rays as well as work site evaluations.

Inpatient rehabilitation program
Our inpatient rehabilitation program is ideal for individuals facing reduced functionality due to a medical condition, injury, or illness. In this program, we provide comprehensive inpatient rehab services that cater to patients experiencing a wide range of health challenges, including stroke, brain injuries, lower extremity amputation, and cardiopulmonary issues. Once you and your doctor have made the decision that you need inpatient rehabilitative care, a clinical liaison from Portneuf will help you understand what program is right for you.
Conditions we treat with inpatient rehabilitation
Our experts provide rehabilitative care for a variety of health conditions, ranging from neurological conditions such as stroke and Parkinson’s to pulmonary conditions, orthopedic injuries, and heart disease. You may be a good candidate for admission into our inpatient rehab program if you have had a decrease in your ability to function in your normal environment and have experienced any of the following:

We understand there is no one-size-fits-all rehabilitation plan for every patient. That’s why we tailor every treatment plan to your individual needs and goals. Once you and your doctor have made the decision that you need inpatient rehabilitative care, a clinical liaison from Portneuf will help you understand what program is right for you. They will also talk to your doctor or case manager, review your chart, and speak with you and your family to understand your current situation and goals and to help make your transition to rehab as smooth as possible.
Our program accepts most major health insurance carriers, including Medicare. In some cases, payment may be available through Workers’ Compensation. Our team of insurance experts will help you confirm your coverage and will work with your insurance provider to find out if it covers inpatient rehabilitation services.
Acute rehab unit
Portneuf Medical Center is an acute rehabilitation provider, which means it must provide 15 hours of therapy within a 7-day week, according to guidelines from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. This is typically provided for 3 hours per day, 5 days a week. Acute rehabilitation providers are highly specialized at getting individuals back home and functioning at their best level possible.

As part of our effort to make your rehabilitation as comfortable as possible, we are pleased to offer our patients clean, cozy rooms with many of the amenities of home to help you rest before and after your rehab therapy sessions, and get a good night’s sleep. Our program also offers a spacious, fully-equipped gym which gives you and your clinical care team plenty of rehab therapy treatment options. Interacting with other patients during rehabilitation therapy fosters camaraderie and can help you stay motivated to reach your rehab goals.
Stroke rehabilitation
Portneuf Medical Center’s inpatient stroke rehabilitation program helps stroke patients achieve the highest level of function possible and adjust to any mental and physical changes you may experience after a stroke. Inpatient rehabilitation can also help you relearn skills that were lost or weakened after the stroke.
Our inpatient rehabilitation program was designed by experienced stroke-recovery experts. Your team will work with you and other healthcare professionals involved in your care to develop a personalized plan to maximize your comfort and recovery. Your program will include the latest in treatment technology, living quarters arranged to be similar to your home environment, education and training resources, and programs to help you smoothly transition back to home or your next level of care.
