Breast Changes at Menopause

As women approach menopause, they sometimes experience a decrease in elasticity and density in their breasts. This can make breasts feel more lumpy or irregular. While this is an expected change it can be disconcerting because it is new and different. Just like when our breasts change in adolescence it is important to learn your new “normal.” Knowing what is normal for you can save your life, and there is no better time to get started than during breast cancer awareness month.

Before the Change

Every woman travels a unique road to menopause. This journey often leaves women uncertain of the physical and emotional changes that occur, why these changes take place, what they can do about them, and where to get questions answered. Through the three stages of menopause, fluctuating hormones can bring about a host of short-term physical symptoms including headaches, hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, weight gain, anxiety, mood changes and other changes as well.
