Approximately 73 million adults in the US are affected by hypertension, a condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is chronically elevated. Some causes of hypertension may include smoking, obesity, diabetes, inactive lifestyle, stress, aging, vitamin D deficiency, family history, alcohol or certain medications.

Of course, when we talk about women, it is important to note that menopause increases a woman’s risk for hypertension. During menopause, estrogen levels drop significantly and this drop has a direct effect on a woman’s heart health. When estrogens levels drop, your heart and blood vessels become stiff and less elastic. When this happens your blood pressure tends to rise which can lead to damage in the blood vessels, heart, brain and other organs.

There are usually no symptoms of high blood pressure. For most people, a diagnosis is made by a health care provider typically when blood pressure readings are consistently at 140/90 mmHg or above.
