To raise breast cancer awareness and valuable funds to support patient’s undergoing cancer treatment in Pocatello, more than a dozen female drivers took part in the Pocatello Raceway’s Ladies Shoot Out. During this exciting event, some of the best female drivers in the Pacific Northwest ran 30 laps on the flat track in street stock racers.
The event, held this last August, raised $1,621.00 for the Shannon Potter Fund. The Shannon Potter Fund was established to provide small pleasures for those going through cancer treatment. This fund was created by a group of vibrant and enthusiastic young woman from Pocatello.
When Shannon was diagnosed with stage-four breast cancer at the age of 31, she proudly proclaimed, “I will not let this get me down!” She found a way to do the things she wanted to do every single day, no matter how she felt. As Shannon went through her journey with breast cancer, she told friends and family that she wanted to see a fund established that would bring joy to other cancer patients by providing simple pleasures that would help to remind them that they can have fun, even during their toughest times.
“When going through breast cancer treatment, many families have to cut expenses,” said Joanne Bailey, breast cancer survivor and owner of the Pocatello Raceway. “The fund helps provide families with some resources so they are better able to enjoy life even as they go through cancer treatment.”
Every dollar donated to the Portneuf Health Trust’s Patient Assistance Fund or the Shannon Potter Fund is used to directly benefit cancer patients in our local area. The funds help our family, friends, neighbors and community members meet crucial needs while going through treatment; monies help cover the cost of extra-curricular activities for the children of cancer patients and help with practical needs that often arise during a patient’s cancer treatments.
