Portneuf Heart and Vascular Team Completes 100th Watchman

Pocatello, ID — Portneuf Medical Center’s heart and vascular team took a moment this week to recognize cardiologist and electrophysiologist, Lynn Otto, MD, for being on the team that just completed their 100th procedure to implant a Watchman device. This tiny device helps prevent stroke in certain patients with Atrial Fibrillation (AFib).

“Reaching the 100th case is a significant moment for this whole team,” said Dr. Otto. “This is truly a collaborative effort in which many individuals and specialties come together to ensure a safe and successful implant for our patients.”

POCATELLO — June is National Hernia Awareness Month, and two local doctors want community members to know if you're suffering from a hernia, there is help.

Dr. Jorge De Amorim Filho is a general and trauma surgeon as well as director of Robotics and Hernia Center of Excellence at Portneuf Medical Center. De Amorim Filho said hernias are defects that show up in the body as holes. A hernia occurs when an internal organ pushes through that hole or weak spot. This typically shows up in the abdominal wall, groin, belly button and diaphragm.

100 Deadliest Days

Memorial Day weekend is the official start of the summer season. BBQ’s, camping trips and family vacations begin leading to busier roads and an increase in traffic accidents and deaths. As society begins to emerge from the pandemic, travel will increase and the roads will be more crowded. The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is known as the “100 deadliest days.” During this time, fatal crashes nearly double compared to the rest of the year.

The three most common factors in Idaho motor vehicle crashes are aggressive, distracted, and impaired driving.

Each year, over 500,000 men visit their urologist for a vasectomy in the United States.  In the last several years, urologists across the country have reported increases of as much as 50 percent in the number of vasectomies scheduled in the days leading up to the NCAA tournament.

A vasectomy is a relatively simple procedure performed right in the clinic under local anesthesia. It takes about 30 minutes to perform with a standard recovery period of seven days.

Thousands Attended Brake for Breakfast

Every three minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. In fact, Portneuf Cancer Center treated over 100 women with breast cancer this past year. To kick off the month of October, Portneuf Medical Center proudly sponsored the 22nd annual Brake for Breakfast. While locally over 2,800 people attended the event, it is worthy to note, Brake for Breakfast events are held throughout southern Idaho and western Wyoming. Combined, participating co-op hospitals successfully reached over 15,000 people.

Portneuf Medical Center Opens a New Wing, Adds Special Care Unit

Portneuf Medical Center (PMC) is opening a renovated wing and adding an 11-bed special care unit (SCU) to support the increased need for specialized inpatient care in the region.

The 11-room unit is a new unit for PMC. It is a step between a medical/surgical unit and the intensive care unit. With state of the art cardiac monitoring and observation, the SCU is thoughtfully designed to meet the unique and special needs of PMC’s cardiac, orthopedic, surgical, respiratory, and advanced care patients.
